Introduction
My first semester of BA (Hons) Television Production was certainly an amazing one! A lot happened in the first semester, so here’s a rundown how the work done when starting university prepared me for my main assignment later on, alongside some info on how I settled into university.

Television Craft
I have had three units: TV Craft, Media Scholarship and TV Principles. In Television Craft, I attended workshops for editing in Avid Media Composer and a workshop with academic Tom Ron Stone where he taught us about how to operate cameras, lighting, types of lighting, audio and so forth – practicing camera/lighting/audio skills by carrying out mini-exercises around the campus. I really loved the practical hands on-approach and used any practice tasks I could get to practice my editing in Avid. In our editing workshops, we’ve covered working wit audio, using keyframes, splicing, how to create a project / timeline, importing files, color correction, different visual effects and transitions alongside framerates and audio FX too! Importantly, my location sessions have enabled me to bond with my course mates and learn more about the amazing, state-of-the-art location-filming gear at Bournemouth University whilst the editing workshops helped me to feel confident in using Avid Media Composer.

For the unit, I then had to do tests: I had to do an editing test in Avid Media Composer which I’m pleased to say that I achieved 86% for. My location Test then saw me setup an interview shot and in total, my combined results for location and editing stand at 89%
Alongside this, I achieved an exceptional 80% for my Development Report, where I had to demonstrate knowledge of post/production equipment and it’s use, knowledge of production. post-production workflows, knowledge of skillsets and aesthetic conventions alongside a reflection of my skills learnt and how I applied them in the form of a 1200 report.
TV Principles (practice location-tasks):
In Television Principles, we had to produce a 25 minute magazine show live from the TV Studios of Bournemouth University, alongside a one minute film based on a choice of trigger-words including poetry, fashion, virtuosity, kindness and urban decay.
In preparation for our individual-based 1-minute locations-films we did two group projects: Feeling Through Cooler and Sound, then the Real Voices Project.
For our Colour and Sound film, we had to produce a 1 minute film based on a colour. My group chose the colour blue and we joinly agreed to film a person going through depression. I contributed to the cinematography by camera operating and enjoyed getting to know my peers alongside working with them collaboratively. I also di my first ever Risk Assessment for this film.
The Real Voices in particular saw me contribute a lot ot that specific prkject and was one of my best BATV creation of Level 4: ww had to interview someone about an interesting of their. I’d recently (in coincidence) met an Astrophotographer called Achilleas Economou (check out his Instagram here) whom I’d radio interview on Matthew’s Blast from the Past and was able to use this new connection to further creating a fascinating documentary into astrophotography asnd his Cypriot background, revealing surprising facts about how Cyprus is occupied and different areas of Cyprus are different from one another. For this Project, I was able to undertake a Pre-Interview, (of course) find the contributor, and also edited everything together on Avid Media Composer, using this as a chance to also practice for my upcoming post-production test for TV Craft
Student Representative:
October 2024 also saw me become a Student Representative for my seminar group for my first year of university. The role involves gaining feedback on the course from my peers on what they do and do not like about the journey through university. I then get to represent these comments on behalf of my seminar group during course-specific meeting with my course’s academics. The aim is for these thoughts to make the university a better place for everyone. It was an honor and privilege to be able to represent my seminar group. I always enjoy being there for others and usually like to think of myself as a kind, and caring person.
